63 Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka for alleged cross-border fishing have been released and returned to their homes in Tamil Nadu.
The fishermen, who were arrested in three separate incidents in October, were released following efforts by the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka and discussions between Indian and Sri Lankan authorities. One fisherman remains in Sri Lankan custody after being sentenced to two years in prison for a second offense.
The fishermen’s release has been welcomed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who had written to the External Affairs Minister seeking their release. Various political party leaders had also urged the Union government to intervene in the matter.
The Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka is making arrangements for the repatriation of the remaining 21 fishermen, who are expected to return home within the next two days.
