A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday morning. The quake occurred at 8:36 am IST and had a depth of 129 kilometers. The epicenter was located 184 kilometers northwest of Gulmarg.
There were no reports of casualties or material damage. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) tweeted that the earthquake was felt in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Baramulla, and Kupwara.
The NCS said that the earthquake was of “moderate intensity” and that there was no threat of a tsunami.
The earthquake comes just days after a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Doda in Jammu and Kashmir on July 10. That earthquake also caused no damage or injuries.
The Kashmir region is located in a seismically active zone and is prone to earthquakes. In 2005, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed more than 70,000 people in the region.
The NCS has advised people in the region to stay safe and to follow the instructions of local authorities.
