Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, tensions remain high along the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Army has reported responding to unprovoked small-arms fire initiated by Pakistani positions across the LoC during the night of May 5 and the early hours of May 6.
According to a statement released by the Indian Army, Pakistani forces engaged in unprovoked small-arms firing from their posts in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor within Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army stated that it responded in a “proportionate manner.”
This incident marks the twelfth consecutive day of India’s retaliatory actions since the Pakistan Army’s unprovoked small-arms firing commenced on the night of April 25 to 26. Prior to this, on the night of May 4 and 5, the Indian Army had also responded to similar unprovoked firing across the LoC in the same sectors. The Indian Army emphasized that its troops responded in a “calibrated and proportionate” manner.
In a significant move on April 30, India closed its airspace to all aircraft registered in Pakistan and those operated by Pakistani airlines. This decision, confirmed by a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), is slated to remain in effect until May 23 (estimated duration) and encompasses all Pakistani-registered, operated, or leased aircraft, including military flights.
Earlier, on April 29, the Director Generals of Military Operations of India and Pakistan held a hotline conversation to address the ongoing unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistan, as per defence sources. During the discussion, India reportedly issued a strong warning to Pakistan against these violations along the LoC and the International Border.
