The Jammu and Kashmir Police detained a terrorist associate, Abdul Karim Butt, in Kishtwar under the Public Safety Act (PSA) on Thursday. Butt is the brother of hardcore Hizbul Mujahideen commander Jahangir Saroori.
The police said that Butt was previously involved in anti-national activities and was booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He is currently facing trial in an NIA court.
The police said that Butt’s current activities are prejudicial to the security of the country and that his free movements in the society could radicalize youth. Therefore, he has been detained under the PSA and lodged in the District Jail in Kishtwar.
The PSA is a preventive detention law that allows the government to detain a person for up to two years without trial. It is often used against suspected terrorists and their associates.
The detention of Butt is a sign that the Jammu and Kashmir Police is taking a tough stance against terrorism. It is also a reminder of the threat that terrorism continues to pose to the region.
