Police in Jammu and Kashmir have cracked a major case of drug smuggling into the Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, arresting three people and seizing weapons and a vehicle.
The operation unfolded on November 22, 2023, when a routine search at the jail uncovered a cricket ball stuffed with heroin capsules and a pen drive. This prompted the filing of FIR number 92/2023 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and the Prison Act.
Just six days later, on November 28, another cricket ball containing similar contraband was found, leading to FIR number 97/2023.
The gravity of the situation, involving repeated incidents in a high-security zone, led to the formation of a special team headed by SDPO Akhnoor Mohan Lal Sharma. The team, assisted by SHO Akhnoor Inspector Zaheer Mushtaq and SHO Ghartoa Inspector Joginder Singh, meticulously analyzed technical data, interviewed inmates, and gathered human intelligence.
Their efforts paid off when they apprehended three suspects from different locations. During questioning, the men – identified as Rahul Kumar (Makhanpur, Bishnah), Rahul Kumar (Kothi Khour, Miran Sahib), and Arjun Kumar (Kulliyan, RS Pura) – confessed to their involvement in the smuggling ring.
Police recovered two sharp-edged weapons from the accused and impounded the vehicle they were using. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network and any potential accomplices.
This successful operation sends a strong message that illegal activities within correctional facilities will not be tolerated. The swift and thorough investigation demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to maintaining order and safety even in sensitive areas.
