The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the heat wave in Kashmir valley will continue for the next week. The IMD has forecast hot and dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union territories over the next week.
The IMD has advised people, especially the elderly and children, to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated. They have also advised people to avoid strenuous activities during the day.
The heat wave in Kashmir is the worst in 18 years. On Sunday, Srinagar city recorded its hottest September day in 18 years with a maximum temperature of 32.9 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 24 degrees Celsius, which was 4.9 degrees above normal and the hottest day at the tourist resort since 27 September 2009. Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a high of 32.4 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees above normal and the hottest September day since 2019.
The IMD has said that the heat wave is due to the absence of any major weather systems in the region. The dry weather is expected to continue for the next week.
The heat wave has caused widespread discomfort in the valley. People have been advised to take precautions to avoid heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.
