After experiencing snowfall and rain, the Kashmir Valley witnessed a significant drop in minimum temperatures on Monday, with most areas hovering close to or even below the freezing point.
While Srinagar and Kokernag managed to stay just above zero, Pahalgam and Gulmarg remained firmly in the sub-zero territory, according to weather officials.
Pahalgam, a popular base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, saw the mercury plummet to minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, making it the Valley’s coldest spot on Sunday night. Gulmarg, known for its ski slopes, wasn’t far behind with a bone-chilling minus 3 degrees Celsius.
Even Srinagar, the region’s capital, registered a chilly 0.7 degrees Celsius. Qazigund and Kokernag followed suit with lows of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius and 0.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
This sudden dip marked the end of a three-week dry spell that had blanketed Kashmir. Last Thursday, a welcome change arrived in the form of snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the plains, bringing much-needed relief to the parched land.
