Kathua Police have arrested one individual and recovered a significant quantity of illicit liquor, continuing their crackdown on the illegal trade and transportation of alcohol.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Inspector Ashish Sharma, SHO P/S Hiranagar, under the guidance of SP Ops Kathua Sh. Mukund Tibrewal IPS and SDPO Border Sh. Dheeraj Katoch, intercepted a Baleno car (Registration No. JK08J-3626) in the Hiranagar area on July 12, 2025. During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers discovered 108 quarters (250 ml each) of JK Excise Whisky.
The driver, identified as Ramesh Chander Sharma, son of Janak Raj Sharma, a resident of Gurah Mundian, Tehsil Hiranagar, District Kathua, was arrested on the spot. Police believe Sharma intended to sell the illicit liquor for illegal profit in the local area.
The recovered liquor and the vehicle have been seized. A case has been registered under FIR No. 98/2025 U/S 48 (a) of the Excise Act at PS Hiranagar, and an investigation is underway.
SSP Kathua Sh. Shobhit Saksena IPS reiterated the police’s commitment to taking strict action against anyone involved in the illegal trade or transportation of illicit liquor. The Kathua Police’s efforts have been widely appreciated by the public, who believe such actions will deter others from engaging in similar unlawful activities.
