Ladakh received a much-needed snowfall on Friday morning, ending a prolonged dry spell despite a biting cold wave.
While tragedy struck in Ramban with a young man’s death, Ladakhis rejoiced as snow blanketed the region. The snowfall, anticipated by farmers facing a minimal snowfall season so far, brought hope for replenishing water resources.
Ladakh’s dependence on glacier meltwater for irrigation and other needs makes snowfall crucial. Nestled in a rain shadow zone, the region relies heavily on winter’s bounty to nourish its land and retreat its glaciers.
