Mohan Bhagwat, the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), emphasized on Friday the crucial need to transform Sanskrit into a widely used medium of communication. Speaking at the inauguration of a new building at Kavi Kulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, Bhagwat asserted that Sanskrit is the root of all Indian languages.
Bhagwat highlighted a distinction between merely comprehending Sanskrit and being able to converse fluently in it. He acknowledged his own experience, stating, “I have learnt the language but am not able to speak it fluently.” He stressed that Sanskrit must reach every household, advocating for its active use in daily communication.
While the Sanskrit university will receive government support, Bhagwat underscored the importance of public patronage for its success. He also linked the promotion of Sanskrit to the concept of ‘atmanirbhar’ (self-reliance), stating that achieving this goal requires the development of intellect and knowledge.
Bhagwat described language as a “bhav” (emotion) and explained that “swatwa” – individuality – is conveyed through language, emphasizing that it is not materialistic. He reiterated his belief that Sanskrit is the origin of all Indian languages and suggested that understanding Sanskrit is akin to understanding India itself.
