Manipur is grappling with widespread flash floods caused by overflowing rivers and breached embankments, impacting over 56,000 people. An official statement released on Tuesday confirmed that 10,477 houses have been damaged across the state.
The floods have led to significant displacement, with 2,913 people evacuated from affected areas so far. Tragically, one person was reported missing on Monday after being swept away by a river in the Imphal East district.
Imphal East district has been particularly hard hit, with a fresh embankment breach reported at Bashikhong as the Kongba river overflowed its banks on Monday. Several areas in the state capital, Imphal, along with many parts of Imphal East, are now submerged due to swollen rivers breaching embankments in Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon.
In response to the crisis, 57 relief camps have been established, primarily in the severely affected Imphal East district, to provide shelter and aid to those displaced by the floods. Compounding the situation, 93 landslides have been reported across Manipur over the past five days, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the state.
