The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) recently held a Working Committee meeting, chaired by party president Farooq Abdullah, where it reaffirmed its commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and addressed critical issues facing the region.
The party unanimously adopted seven resolutions, with the foremost being an “unwavering commitment” to reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The NC views this as “central to the aspirations and dignity of the people” and vowed to continue its fight for its restoration, which was revoked by the Central Government in August 2019 with the repeal of Article 370.
The Working Committee also strongly condemned the “horrific Baisaran attack” in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including a young resident, Syed Adil Hussain Shah. The party also denounced ongoing cross-border shelling that has claimed 23 civilian lives, expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved families. Tributes were also paid to deceased party workers and activists.
Furthermore, the NC demanded the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, citing assurances made in Parliament and by the Supreme Court. The party welcomed the announcement of a “ceasefire” and urged both India and Pakistan to “uphold peace and explore long-lasting, peaceful solutions to end violence.”
Reiterating its commitment to its manifesto, the party pledged to “uphold justice, peace, and people’s rights through democratic means.” The committee acknowledged the public’s compassion towards stranded tourists and their unequivocal rejection of violence.
However, the NC warned the government against actions that could exacerbate alienation, specifically mentioning “arbitrary arrests, harassment of youth, targeted use of bulldozers, and intimidation of media.” They cautioned that such actions would only alienate those who have consistently stood for peace.
Finally, the NC expressed serious concern over reports of harassment faced by Kashmiris across India, particularly students and traders. The party condemned their “selective targeting” and called upon all state governments to ensure the safety, dignity, and protection of Kashmiris living or working in other parts of the country.
