A strong earthquake struck a remote pocket of Nepal on November 4, killing over 120 people and injuring at least 140 others. The quake was felt as far away as India’s capital, New Delhi, nearly 500 kilometers from the epicenter.
Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ headed to the scene with a medical team on Saturday morning. Both the Nepal Army and Nepal Police have been mobilized to carry out rescue operations.
Nepal is located on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas. As a result, earthquakes are a common occurrence in the country.
In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and destroying more than half a million homes. In November 2022, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Doti district, near Jajarkot, killing six people.
