Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level security meeting on Tuesday, attended by key defense and security officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, the three service chiefs (Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh), and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
This meeting followed a recent Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting on April 23, prompted by the deadly terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 fatalities.
Government sources reported that Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to decisively counter terrorism. He expressed complete trust in the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces, granting them full operational autonomy to determine the method, targets, and timing of India’s response.
Prior to this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Prime Minister Modi on Monday, following a briefing from Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan regarding actions taken in response to the Pahalgam attack.
The government has pledged severe consequences for the terrorists involved and those who orchestrated the attack.
An all-party meeting was convened after the Pahalgam incident, during which opposition parties pledged their full support for any government action against the perpetrators.
During the CCS briefing, evidence of cross-border connections to the attack was presented. It was emphasized that the attack occurred following successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir and its ongoing economic development.
The government has announced a series of measures, including a potential suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, to signal a strong message to Pakistan regarding its alleged support for cross-border terrorism.
