PM Modi To Inaugurate Two-Day Rising Northeast Investors Summit On Friday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the two-day ‘Rising Northeast Investor Summit’ on Friday, May 23, in an effort to highlight the significant investment potential of the northeastern states. The summit aims to attract investors by showcasing access to captive markets within the region and in neighboring countries.

The event, concluding on May 24, will gather an impressive array of participants, including chief ministers from the northeastern states, Union ministers, senior bureaucrats, foreign diplomats, and over 2,000 delegates, policymakers, industry leaders, and investors. Discussions will span more than nine priority sectors, including agriculture, food processing, textiles, tourism, entertainment, education, healthcare, IT, and energy.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), emphasized the Northeast’s immense future potential for India. He described the summit as an opportunity to showcase the “Ashta Lakshmi”—India’s eight northeastern states—as central to the country’s transformative growth. Scindia underscored the Prime Minister’s vision to establish the region as a pivotal point for India’s future growth, aligning with the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. He highlighted the Northeast’s rich cultural heritage, abundant natural resources, and strategic geographical position as a powerful gateway to Southeast Asia.

Scindia also noted that the committed investments over the past decade, coupled with the Prime Minister’s focus on infrastructure, healthcare, and education, have laid a strong foundation for the Northeast to emerge as an economic powerhouse, not just for India but globally.

Officials further detailed that the summit will emphasize the region’s geo-strategic advantages, rich natural resources, skilled workforce, and unique access to captive markets in neighboring nations. The event is designed to be a prime platform for businesses looking to expand, forge alliances, create partnerships, and explore opportunities for new investments and greenfield manufacturing projects.

Pre-summit activities organized by the DoNER ministry have already generated significant interest, with investment proposals exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore across the northeastern states. A notable precursor was an Ambassadors’ Meet held on April 15, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, which provided foreign investors with insights into the region. This event saw participation from ambassadors and high commissioners of over 75 countries. Officials confirmed that numerous industry houses and investors have already pledged substantial investments, with Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and letters of intent worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore already signed.
