Poonch district in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has borne the brunt of recent cross-border shelling from Pakistan, according to Tariq Hamid Karra, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC).
Karra announced that Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is visiting Poonch to express solidarity with the affected residents. “Poonch has been the worst affected by Pakistani shelling,” Karra stated, emphasizing that Gandhi is the first national leader to visit the area. Gandhi’s itinerary includes visits to institutions damaged by the shelling, meetings with civil society representatives, and a stop at the Dak Bungalow.
Karra also raised concerns about a “third country” announcing the cessation of military action between India and Pakistan. He questioned this despite India’s stated policy against third-party intervention. “We expect Pakistan to remain committed to the ceasefire, though questions have been raised – why did a third country announce it despite the government’s policy of no third-party intervention,” Karra remarked, urging security forces to remain vigilant due to the unpredictable nature of Pakistan’s future actions.
