Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a historic visit to Croatia, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Balkan nation. His trip underscored a shared commitment to democratic values, global peace, and a significant strengthening of bilateral ties.
Key Outcomes of the India-Croatia Summit
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi held productive discussions with his Croatian counterpart, Andrej Plenković, and also met with Croatian President Zoran Milanović. The talks focused on a wide range of issues, from bolstering economic cooperation to enhancing cultural exchanges.
Shared Stance on Global Conflicts and Terrorism
Both leaders emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable solutions to global problems, whether in Europe or Asia. This comes amid intensifying military confrontations, particularly in West Asia. They firmly agreed that terrorism is an enemy of humanity and inimical to democratic principles. Prime Minister Modi thanked Croatia for its steadfast support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism, and the Croatian Prime Minister expressed sorrow over a recent terror attack in India, acknowledging India’s strong message on fighting terrorism. Both leaders stressed the importance of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty for all nations.
Deepening Bilateral Cooperation
Celebrating the “happy coincidence” of both leaders securing a third term in their respective countries, Modi asserted a commitment to accelerate bilateral ties. Key areas identified for enhanced cooperation include:
- Defense and Security: Working closely to strengthen security cooperation.
- Economic Relations: Boosting bilateral trade and exploring synergies in various sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, IT, renewable energy, digital technology, semiconductors, and shipbuilding. Discussions also touched upon the efforts to conclude the India-EU free trade agreement, which Croatia supports.
- Technology and Innovation: India will share its space experience with Croatia, and cooperation in cybersecurity will be increased.
- Connectivity: The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was termed an “excellent opportunity” for regional connectivity.
- Cultural and People-to-People Ties: Four memoranda of cooperation were signed in the areas of agriculture, culture, and science. The duration of the Hindi Chair at Zagreb University has been extended until 2030, and a five-year cultural exchange program has been prepared. Modi highlighted the popularity of Indology and Yoga in Croatia, expressing eagerness to deepen cultural and people-to-people linkages, including through tourism.
Gifts and Ceremonial Welcome
In a special gesture, Prime Minister Plenković personally received Prime Minister Modi at the airport. Plenković gifted Modi a reprint of Vezdin’s Sanskrit Grammar, the first printed Sanskrit grammar written in Latin by Croatian scientist Filip Vezdin, symbolizing early cultural ties. He also presented Modi with the book “Croatia & India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business.” Modi laid a wreath at the Monument to the Homeland and was shown around the historical city center of Zagreb by Plenković.
