Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, though he did not provide a specific timeline. Speaking at the “Times Now Summit 2025,” Shah highlighted the successful and peaceful assembly elections held in the region last year.
He stated, “We have given the assurance that statehood will be restored. From the very beginning, we have said that statehood would be given. But it can’t be disclosed when it will be given at a public forum.”
Shah referenced the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories, recalling his parliamentary promise of eventual statehood restoration. He emphasized the significant progress made, noting, “This was the first election in Kashmir after 40 years in which there was no re-polling in any place. Not a single tear gas or bullet was fired. Sixty per cent people exercised their franchise, this is a huge change.”
