On Monday, December 11th, 2023, a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court commenced delivering three separate judgments regarding the validity of the Central government’s August 5th, 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution. This article provided special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, and Surya Kant, assembled at 10:56 am to present their three separate but concurring judgments.
Chief Justice Chandrachud announced that there would be three judgments on the matter: one written by himself on behalf of himself, Justices Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant; and one each by Justice Kaul and Justice Khanna.
This momentous judgment follows a 16-day hearing in September 2023 on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370. The court reserved its verdict on September 5th, 2023.
