The body of the third victim of the LJHP canal tragedy, Haji Mehnaz Rashid Shah, a 40-year-old resident of Khanyar, Srinagar, was recovered on Monday afternoon. This recovery brings the confirmed death toll for the incident to three and concludes the multi-agency search operation.
Shah was one of three family members swept away by strong currents while attempting to rescue two children who had fallen into the water during a picnic. While one person was rescued on the day of the incident, the bodies of the two minors, Ahmad Bin Khalid of Hyderpora and another child from Narkara Budgam, were recovered previously.
The extensive search, lasting over 36 hours, involved dedicated teams from SDRF Baramulla, Civil Defence Uri, J&K Police, and local volunteers. Officials have confirmed that medico-legal formalities are now being completed before Shah’s body is released to his family.
