The Baramulla Police in Jammu and Kashmir has busted an inter-district fake marriage racket and arrested four people. The accused individuals were operating as middlemen during marriage functions and used WhatsApp to send photos of various young women, falsely claiming they were ready for marriage.
They would then convince the victims on the other side to agree to marriage proposals, fix the mehar money, and make payments. However, no marriages were ever conducted and the money was not returned.
The accused have been identified as Laal Hussain, Irshada Begum, Ab Rahman Rather, and Ab Khaliq Dar. They have been charged with fraud and cheating under the Indian Penal Code.
The police said that the accused had managed to accumulate a significant sum of 7 lakh 38 thousand rupees from unsuspecting victims. They are currently being held in police custody.
The police have appealed to the public to be wary of such fraudulent activities and to only deal with trusted individuals when arranging marriages.
