Heavy rains are set to continue in Himachal Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a fresh warning for the coming days. The IMD has put out an Orange Alert for August 11 and 12 in three districts and a Yellow Alert for the rest of the state.
The state has been hit hard by the monsoon season. Since June 20, 202 people have died in monsoon-related incidents. This includes 108 deaths from rain, floods, and landslides, and 94 from road accidents.
Current and Upcoming Rainfall
Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the state’s mid and lower hill districts between August 8 and 10. Specific forecasts from Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD Shimla Centre, include:
- August 8: Isolated heavier rainfall is possible in Solan, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla.
- August 9: A Yellow Alert is in place for heavy rainfall in Kangra, Una, and Sirmaur.
- August 10-11: Rainfall activity is expected to increase overnight, with isolated heavy downpours possible in Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, Una, and Bilaspur.
- August 11-12: Widespread rainfall is likely across the state. An Orange Alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi. A Yellow Alert is in effect for other mid-hill districts, including Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Kullu.
