The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has moved the Delhi High Court seeking modification of the court’s order directing physical presence of Yasin Malik, the chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).
The NIA said that Malik is a very high-risk prisoner and his physical presence in court could pose a threat to public order and safety. The agency requested that Malik be allowed to join the proceedings through video conferencing.
The NIA also argued that Malik is a “rarest of rare” case and deserves the death penalty. The agency cited Malik’s involvement in the killing of four Indian Air Force personnel and the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, the daughter of then-home minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
The NIA also said that Malik received training in handling weapons from the ISI and was instrumental in the rise of the JKLF.
The Delhi High Court will hear the NIA’s application on August 9.
