Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday appointed Braj Raj Sharma, a retired IAS officer, as the State Election Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir. Sharma will hold the position till he attains the age of 65 years.
The order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) said that the appointment of Sharma will take effect from the date he assumes the charge. The terms and conditions of his appointment will be notified by the government subsequently.
Sharma is a 1983-batch IAS officer who retired in 2018. He has served in various positions in the government, including as the District Magistrate of Srinagar and Jammu. He was also the Secretary to the Government in the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.
The appointment of Sharma as the State Election Commissioner is seen as a move to ensure free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He is a seasoned administrator with a deep understanding of the electoral process.
