he Border Security Force (BSF) and the Punjab Police on Monday arrested two Pakistani smugglers and seized 29 kilograms of heroin from them in Ferozepur district.
The joint operation was carried out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday along the banks of the Sutlej river near Gatti Matar village.
The BSF personnel noticed the movement of the smugglers around 2:45 am and challenged them. However, the smugglers opened fire, prompting the BSF personnel to retaliate.
In the exchange of fire, one of the smugglers was injured in the hand. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.
The other smuggler was arrested along with the 29 kg heroin. The heroin was concealed in 26 packets.
The BSF said the seized heroin is worth around Rs 150 crore in the international market.
This is the second major seizure of heroin in Ferozepur district in the past two weeks. On August 10, the BSF and the Punjab Police had seized 30 kg heroin from a Pakistani smuggler.
The BSF has been stepping up its anti-smuggling operations along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab. In the past few months, the BSF has seized a large quantity of drugs, including heroin, from smugglers.
The seizure of heroin is a major blow to the drug smugglers operating along the India-Pakistan border. It also shows the determination of the BSF and the Punjab Police to curb the smuggling of drugs.
