A sand digger drowned in the Jhelum River near Litrabal, Pampore, on Wednesday morning after a boat carrying three workers capsized.
Two of the workers were rescued by locals and other laborers. However, the third man, Khursheed Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Chek Ranbir Pora, Damhal, Kulgam, drowned.
According to officials, the incident occurred during sand extraction work midstream. The boat became unstable due to overloading with sand and strong water currents.
Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the police, along with local residents, are on-site and have launched an operation to retrieve Bhat’s body.
