Following escalating cross-border tensions and Pakistani shelling in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited affected areas to assess the damage and offer support to residents. The shelling, which followed India’s “Operation Sindoor” targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK, resulted in 27 fatalities, with 20 occurring in Poonch alone, and over 50 injuries.
Abdullah, accompanied by advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Ajaz Jan, surveyed heavily damaged areas and met with bereaved families, including those of Amarjeet Singh and Amrik Singh, to offer condolences. Locals briefed the chief minister on the situation, emphasizing the urgent need for safety measures.
During his visit to Surankote, Abdullah interacted with displaced residents and was briefed by Minister Javed Rana on administrative relief efforts. Notably, he emphasized the critical need for constructing bunkers to protect border residents. He also planned to visit Rajouri.
After four days of intense cross-border exchanges, including drone and missile strikes, a relative calm settled overnight, marking the first peaceful night in recent days. This followed an agreement reached between New Delhi and Islamabad on Saturday afternoon to cease hostilities.
