US President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that his administration brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following a period of escalated tensions involving cross-border strikes. Trump stated he “convinced” the two nuclear-armed nations to pursue peace and trade deals, attributing the success to a team effort involving himself, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President J.D. Vance. He emphasized the potential for catastrophic consequences from a nuclear conflict and highlighted the importance of promoting trade over military action.
Specifically, Trump cited “Operation Sindoor” by India in response to a terror attack, and subsequent Pakistani retaliatory actions. He asserted that the ceasefire, reached after US-mediated talks, prevented a potential nuclear war. Trump also mentioned using trade as leverage in the negotiations.
However, India has consistently maintained that the situation was resolved through bilateral discussions between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, and that no third party mediation occurred. India also reiterated that the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India, and the Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter with Pakistan, excluding third party intervention.
