Monsoon-related disasters have taken a severe toll on Himachal Pradesh, resulting in 276 deaths since June 20. According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA), 143 of these fatalities were directly caused by rain-related incidents like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while another 133 were the result of road accidents. The HPSDMA also reports that 336 people have been injured and 37 are missing.
Widespread Damage and Disruption
The human toll has been particularly high in certain districts. Mandi and Kangra have seen the most rain-related deaths, with 26 and 29 fatalities respectively, while Chamba and Mandi recorded the highest number of road accident deaths, each with 21.
The monsoon’s impact extends beyond human lives, causing significant damage to public infrastructure and private property. The estimated financial losses have exceeded Rs 2,21,164.75 lakh, with the Public Works Department, Jal Shakti Vibhag, and Power Department suffering the most extensive damage.
The heavy rains have severely disrupted essential services:
Roads: As of August 20, 359 roads remain blocked, including three national highways, primarily due to landslides. The districts of Kullu (104) and Mandi (181) have been the hardest hit by road closures.
Power: Over 550 distribution transformers are out of service, with major outages in Kullu and Mandi, impacting power supply to thousands.
Water: 132 water supply schemes are non-functional, with Kullu and Mandi being the worst affected.
Safety Warnings and Ongoing Challenges
Restoration work is ongoing, but continuous heavy rainfall and recurring landslides are hindering efforts. The HPSDMA has issued a strong advisory for residents to avoid unnecessary travel in landslide-prone areas and to stay alert to weather advisories. The risk of further disasters remains high as the monsoon season continues.
