In a major step forward, the Chenab River was diverted through tunnels at Drabshalla in Kishtwar district on January 27, 2024, accelerating the construction of the 850 MW Ratle Hydroelectric Project.
This diversion marks a significant milestone, isolating the dam area and allowing excavation and construction work to begin. It will significantly expedite project progress and minimize delays, aiming to meet the scheduled commissioning deadline of May 2026.
Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL), a joint venture between NHPC Limited (51%) and the Jammu & Kashmir government (49%), is spearheading the project.
Located on the Chenab River in Kishtwar, the Ratle project boasts an installed capacity of 850 MW and received Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approval in January 2021 with a budget of Rs 5,281.94 crore.
