Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday (local time) that India’s presence at the upcoming G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, is “essential” for discussions on critical global issues, including security and energy. Prime Minister Carney, who will chair the G7 discussions, emphasized that as the world’s fifth-largest economy and most populous country, India’s participation is crucial, particularly concerning global supply chains and building infrastructure in emerging and developing nations.
PM Carney confirmed that India and Canada have also agreed to continue their law enforcement dialogue. He stated that he extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit, which PM Modi has accepted.
Prime Minister Modi confirmed his attendance in a post on X, congratulating Carney on his recent election victory and expressing his anticipation for the summit. He stated that “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”
This invitation marks a significant development in the strained relationship between the two nations, which deteriorated following Canadian allegations in June 2023 that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan activist, in Vancouver. India vehemently denied these claims, leading to tit-for-tat expulsions of senior diplomats.
