A young life was tragically cut short when Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old student from India attending Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, was killed by a stray bullet. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near Upper James and South Bend Road as Harsimrat was waiting at a bus stop on her way to work.
According to Hamilton Police, who are investigating this as a homicide, Harsimrat was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shooting between occupants of two vehicles. Witnesses and video footage indicate that someone in a black car fired shots at people in a white sedan. Both vehicles fled the scene shortly after the shooting.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed their deep sorrow on X, confirming Harsimrat’s status as an innocent victim and stating they are providing all necessary support to her family.
Hamilton Police reported receiving calls about the shooting around 7:30 pm local time. Upon arrival, they found Harsimrat with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. In a chilling detail, stray bullets also struck a nearby home, narrowly missing the residents inside.
Authorities are urging anyone who was in the area between 7:15 pm and 7:45 pm and may have dashcam or security footage to come forward with any information that could assist their investigation.
