India’s COVID-19 cases rose slightly on Monday, with 112 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. This marks an increase from the double-digit daily cases seen until December 5th. The rise is attributed to the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions.
Despite the increase, officials remain optimistic, stressing that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in cases or a surge in hospitalizations or deaths. The peak of the pandemic in India occurred during the Delta wave in April-June 2021, with a record 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths reported on May 7th, 2021.
Currently, India has around 1,460 active cases, with most patients recovering under home isolation. The country has also administered over 220 crore doses of COVID vaccines.
Overall, while there has been a slight uptick in cases, the situation remains under control, with a high recovery rate and extensive vaccination coverage. However, officials remain vigilant and urge people to continue following safety protocols.
