A Block Development Council (BDC) member in Ganderbal, central Kashmir, was arrested on Friday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for accepting a bribe. The arrest followed a complaint from a materials provider alleging bribery demands for issuing a disposal permit.
The complainant, having met all legal requirements, applied for the permit at the District Mineral Officer (DMO) office. However, the process was deliberately delayed. Frustrated, the complainant approached DMO Majid Aziz, who directed them to BDC member Gowhar Ahmad, supposedly to “accommodate” their request.
Ahmad allegedly demanded a ₹50,000 bribe, with ₹10,000 upfront. Refusing to succumb, the complainant lodged a formal complaint with the ACB.
Acting swiftly, the ACB laid a trap and apprehended Ahmad red-handed while accepting the initial bribe amount of ₹10,000. The money was recovered on the spot.
