Chief Justice Tashi Rabstan of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court stressed the necessity of a unified effort to combat drug abuse in the two Union territories. Speaking at a seminar organized by the J-K High Court Bar Association Jammu and the Criminologists Society of J-K, he called on the legal community to actively participate in this fight, highlighting the potential of new criminal laws to deter drug-related offenses.
Justice Rabstan recalled his past work as chairperson of the State Legal Services Authority, where he employed various educational methods like street plays, skits, and panel discussions to raise awareness among students. He reiterated that a collaborative and integrated approach is crucial for the success of the central government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
High Court Judge Sanjeev Kumar identified two key groups in the drug problem: the consumers and the traffickers. He proposed counseling and alternative therapies for those addicted, while advocating for punitive measures to discourage those involved in the distribution and cultivation of drugs.
Rameshwar Singh Jamwal, president of the Criminologists Society, also addressed the seminar, requesting the judiciary’s support to effectively address the drug menace.
