Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off a Walkathon for Wildlife from the Police Golf Course to Nishat Bagh in Srinagar on October 7, 2023, as part of Wildlife Week 2023.
In his address, the Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the J&K Administration’s commitment to wildlife conservation, protection of the unique and rich ecological heritage, and sustainable economic growth. He called for community-led conservation of biodiversity and wildlife, and urged citizens to become Wildlife and Environment Mitras and spread awareness on adopting sustainable lifestyles.
The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the UT administration’s efforts, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the integrated development of wildlife habitats and promotion of eco tourism and green economy. He mentioned that the Hangul Breeding Centre in Tral, which had been languishing since 2008, has been revived and completed this year. The Hangul population has also seen an increase, and two more RAMSAR sites were added in 2022. Last year, more than 13 lakh migratory birds were sighted in J&K.
The Lieutenant Governor also appreciated the initiatives taken by the Department of Wildlife Protection for mitigation of man-animal conflict, safety of human lives, their property, and livestock.
