Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, a highly decorated officer with 38 years of distinguished service, today assumed the crucial role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff. He succeeds Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, who retired on July 31st after an illustrious 39-year military career.
Commissioned into the 4th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) in December 1987, Lt Gen Singh brings a wealth of experience from India’s key military operations. His career highlights include:
- Commanding a Special Forces Unit: He led a Special Forces unit in the challenging terrains of the Kashmir Valley and along the Line of Control.
- Leading Formations: He commanded an infantry brigade and a mountain division during ‘Operation Snow Leopard’ along the Line of Actual Control.
- Operational Tenures: His extensive operational experience spans ‘Operation Pawan’, ‘Operation Meghdoot’, ‘Operation Orchid’, and multiple tenures in ‘Operation Rakshak’.
A Legacy of Bravery: Operation Pawan
In a solemn ceremony at the National War Memorial, Lt Gen Singh, accompanied by ‘Veer Naris’ (war widows) and families of fallen soldiers, laid a wreath and paid homage to the bravehearts who served under his command. The Army’s post on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted a particularly daring counter-terror operation during ‘Operation Pawan’ in Sri Lanka on July 22, 1989. As a young 2nd Lieutenant, he led a 13-member Quick Reaction Team that faced an ambush. Displaying exemplary leadership, he spearheaded a counter-assault that neutralized four LTTE terrorists and injured several others, despite the supreme sacrifice of five valiant soldiers.
Extensive Experience and Academic Acclaim
Prior to this appointment, Lt Gen Singh served as the Director General Operational Logistics & Strategic Movement at Army Headquarters. His academic background is equally impressive:
- Education: An alumnus of La Martiniere College and Lucknow University, he is also a graduate of the prestigious Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He holds a Master’s in Management Studies from Osmania University and a Master’s in Philosophy from Panjab University.
- Professional Courses: He has attended the Staff Course at Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, the Higher Defence Management Course at CDM, Secunderabad, and the Advance Professional Programme in Public Administration at the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) in New Delhi.
His strategic insights are further honed by his service as the General Officer Commanding of a Corps headquartered in Himachal Pradesh, responsible for sensitive areas including Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot. The Ministry of Defence noted his insightful knowledge and deep understanding of operational dynamics on both western and northern borders.
For his distinguished service to the nation, Lt Gen Singh has been awarded the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Bar to Sena Medal.
