Baramulla, J&K – In a continued effort to combat drug trafficking, Baramulla Police arrested a drug peddler on Sunday, recovering 190 grams of a charas-like substance from his possession.
The arrested individual has been identified as Abid Rasheed Sofi, son of Abdul Rasheed Sofi, a resident of Heewan, Baramulla. He was intercepted by a police party from Sheeri Police Station at a checkpoint established on Zandfaran Link Road.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 30/2025, sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act, at Police Station Sheeri, and an investigation is underway.
Police have urged the public to report any drug-related or other criminal activities to their nearest police station or by dialling 112, emphasizing that public cooperation is crucial in the fight against drug menace. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to taking stringent action against offenders.
This arrest is part of a broader operation by security forces targeting terrorists, their overground workers, sympathizers, and also drug smugglers and peddlers. Intelligence agencies indicate that funds from hawala rackets and drug smuggling are often diverted to finance terrorism. A significant majority, approximately 90%, of drugs and psychotropic substances entering Jammu and Kashmir are believed to be routed through the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB). Trans-border drug smuggling also poses a substantial challenge for states like Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, which share an International Border.
