An Afghan national with a disability in his left leg was arrested by the Indian Army near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. The man, identified as Abdul Wahid, was found in Dabi-Basuni village ahead of the border fence in Balakote sector. He was handed over to police on Tuesday night and is being questioned to ascertain the motive behind his intrusion into Indian territory.
Nothing incriminating was recovered from Wahid’s possession, but some Pakistani currency notes were found on him. The officials said this is the first time that an Afghan national has been arrested along the LoC in Mendhar sub-division of Poonch.
The Army handed over Wahid to police as per the legal formality after completing their questioning. He is being questioned by the police to ascertain his motive behind entering Indian territory and whether he was involved in any terrorist activity.
The arrest of Wahid comes at a time when there has been a rise in infiltration attempts along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. In recent months, the Indian Army has foiled several infiltration bids and arrested a number of infiltrators.
The security forces are on high alert along the LoC and are taking all necessary measures to prevent infiltration and terrorist attacks.
