A man has been arrested in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 20,000. The accused, Imtiaz Ahmed of Ramban district, tricked the woman into handing over her debit card to him while she was trying to withdraw money from an ATM. He then gave her a fake card and used the original card to withdraw the money from her account.
The woman, Babli Devi, lodged a complaint at the Ramnagar police station after the incident. A case was registered and a police team was constituted to investigate the matter. Several suspects were picked up on the basis of human and technical intelligence. Ahmed was eventually arrested and he confessed to the crime during questioning.
The police said that Ahmed is a habitual offender and has been involved in several cases of ATM fraud. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
The police have urged people to be careful when using ATMs and to never hand over their debit cards to strangers. They also advised people to check their bank statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
