At least 10 people are feared dead after a massive cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Jammu and Kashmir’s Chasoti area this afternoon, according to officials. The incident occurred at the starting point of the Machail Mata Yatra, a popular pilgrimage.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the area, and visuals from the scene show pilgrims being evacuated. Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Pankaj Sharma, confirmed that a flash flood had occurred and that rescue operations were underway.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha have both responded to the disaster. Singh stated that he is in constant communication with local officials and that “all possible assistance will be provided.” Sinha has directed various agencies, including the police, army, and disaster response teams, to “strengthen the rescue and relief operations and ensure all possible assistance is provided to the affected.” He also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured.
