Following a Supreme Court directive, the CBI has arrested six police personnel in connection with the alleged custodial torture of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir. The arrests include a deputy superintendent of police, an inspector, and an assistant sub-inspector.
The Supreme Court had ordered the CBI to register a case, calling the torture “brutal and inhuman.” The court also directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to pay the constable a compensation of $500,000.
According to the court, the constable suffered life-altering injuries, including the “complete mutilation of his genitalia,” and was subjected to electric shocks and the use of pepper/chili powder. The bench noted that these actions were a severe violation of the constable’s right to life under Article 21 and found the acts “deeply shocking to the conscience of this court.”
One of the accused, a special police officer, has been removed from service. The other arrested officers have been ordered to surrender their weapons and government property.
