The body of 24-year-old Raufeeq Ahmad Chopan, who went missing after a shikara capsized in Dal Lake on Friday evening, was recovered by officials on Saturday morning. Chopan was a resident of Jogi Lanker in Rainawari.
Officials reported that the shikara he was traveling in with another individual overturned due to strong gusty winds on Friday evening. The other person was rescued shortly after the incident.
A rescue operation was immediately initiated by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local volunteers. The search was paused overnight but resumed early Saturday morning.
Personnel from the SDRF’s Quick Response Team (QRT) stationed at Nehru Park located and retrieved Chopan’s body from the lake near Duck Park, according to officials.
The shikara capsized during a windstorm accompanied by rain that affected normal life in Srinagar on Friday evening, causing uprooted trees and damage in various areas.
