The Department of Wildlife Protection is pleased to announce the successful translocation of two pairs of Indian Grey Wolves to Jambu Zoo. The wolves, donated by Sakkarbaug Zoological Park in Junagadh, Gujarat, arrived in exchange for a pair of leopard cats from Jambu Zoo.
Indian Railways facilitated the transport, utilizing Veterinary Passenger Units (VPU) to ensure a safe and stress-minimized journey for the animals.
Upon arrival, the wolves were placed under a mandatory two-week quarantine period at Jambu Zoo for observation and acclimatization. A dedicated team, including Zoo Veterinary Officer Dr. Ranjit Singh Katoch, Range Officer Sumit Kumar, and experienced animal keepers, is overseeing their care. Following successful completion of the quarantine, the wolves will be introduced to public exhibits, adhering to established animal welfare protocols.
The Indian Grey Wolf, characterized by its high intelligence and social structure of small, monogamous packs, communicates through vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. As predators, they typically hunt in pairs or small groups. The species is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The addition of these wolves to Jambu Zoo’s diverse collection will significantly enhance public education, awareness, and engagement in wildlife conservation efforts.
