Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference (NC) alliance, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, convened an emergency meeting to address concerns over recent actions by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) administration. Two key resolutions were passed:
- Condemnation of the Waqf Amendment Bill: The alliance unanimously opposed the bill, asserting it negatively impacts minority communities.
- Opposition to “Encroachment” on Elected Government Powers: The alliance expressed strong disapproval of any actions that undermine the mandate of the elected government, stating such actions disrespect the people’s will.
Key points from the meeting:
- Tanvir Sadiq, speaking to reporters, emphasized that while the alliance seeks cooperative relations with the LG and New Delhi, this should not be interpreted as weakness. He stressed the importance of maintaining governmental dignity.
- Congress leader Nizam-ud-Din Bhat confirmed that both immediate and long-term issues were discussed, and that all coalition MLAs supported the Chief Minister. He highlighted the consensus on resolving sensitive issues, like the Waqf Bill, through dialogue with the central government.
- NC MLA Abdul Rehman Veeri asserted the rights of the Jammu and Kashmir people, stating they are equal to those of other Indian citizens. He critiqued the LG administration’s recent decisions, including the transfer of 48 Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officers, which has reignited discussions on the division of administrative powers.
The backdrop to this meeting involves ongoing tensions regarding the delineation of administrative powers between the elected government and the LG’s office, particularly concerning the implementation of pending business rules.
