In a surprising announcement on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma declared his immediate retirement from Test cricket, putting an end to speculation surrounding his future in the longest format of the game. This decision leaves the Indian cricket team in search of a new captain for the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
The 38-year-old enjoyed a remarkable second half of his Test career, amassing 4301 runs in 67 matches. His contributions included 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, achieved at a commendable average of 40.57.
Having already stepped down from T20 Internationals following the World Cup last year, Rohit will now focus solely on leading India in the One Day International (ODI) format.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit shared on Instagram, accompanied by a picture of his Test cap, confirming the earlier report by PTI. “Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Rohit’s tenure as Test captain saw India reach the final of the World Test Championship against Australia. While his overall captaincy record was decent, he experienced challenging series against New Zealand at home and Australia earlier this year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The announcement of his retirement means India will need to appoint a new Test captain for the upcoming five-Test series in England, commencing on June 20. Potential candidates for the leadership role include Jasprit Bumrah, who has previously captained the side in a couple of Tests during a tour of Australia, as well as KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.
Notably, Rohit faced a difficult period during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, even dropping himself from the playing XI due to a slump in form. However, at that time, he had dismissed any thoughts of retirement.
Speculation had also arisen regarding potential differences between Rohit and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, who had emphasized a shift away from a “star culture” within the team after assuming his role last July. While both individuals consistently denied any discord, Gambhir had repeatedly stressed that team selection would be based purely on performance.
A significant highlight of Rohit’s Test captaincy was leading India to the final of the 2023 World Test Championship, where they ultimately lost to Australia. This came in the same year that the Indian team also suffered defeat in the final of the ODI World Cup, once again against Australia.
