Jammu’s Jambu Zoo is set to undergo a major expansion to become a world-class tourist destination. In a recent review meeting chaired by Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, officials discussed plans to boost tourism and enhance the visitor experience.
The minister emphasized a vision for the zoo to be a sustainable, innovative, and high-quality attraction. Strategies are being developed to increase attendance, particularly during the summer, by incorporating climate-responsive features like shaded areas and indoor exhibits.
New Attractions and Features
The expansion will introduce several new attractions and amenities, with a focus on education and entertainment.
- New Animals: The zoo plans to add prominent species such as Zebra, Rhino, Sloth Bear, Snow Leopard, and Red Panda.
- Fossil and Dinosaur Park: This major new attraction will offer an educational experience for all ages.
- Immersive AR/VR Setup: Guests will be able to explore extinct and rare species in a simulated environment.
- Night Safari: This new offering will extend operational hours and diversify the visitor experience.
- Visitor Amenities: Plans include new nature trails, elevated walkways, tree houses, a toy train, and a smart zoo management system.
Animal Welfare and Sustainability
Minister Rana stressed that animal welfare must remain a top priority. A robust monitoring system will be implemented to ensure proper diet, nutrition, and healthcare for all animals. Officials were also directed to plant fruit-bearing trees to serve as a natural food source and enhance the zoo’s biodiversity.
In addition to animal care, the zoo will implement green initiatives, including:
- Rainwater harvesting
- Renewable energy solutions
- A Zero-Waste Policy
- Soil and water conservation measures
With these changes, Jambu Zoo aims to significantly increase visitor footfall and become a premier tourism destination. The remaining expansion work is scheduled for completion by December 2025.
